For The Tour

Cusco is the gateway to the Andes and the starting point for your unforgettable journey with Tupac Adventures. The Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco currently handles only domestic flights. If you’re arriving internationally, you’ll need to disembark in Lima, go through Customs, and collect your luggage before checking it in again for your connecting flight to Cusco.

The most convenient way to reach Cusco is by air. Several airlines, including LATAM, Sky Airline, and JetSmart, offer frequent flights. While LATAM tends to be the most reliable, it’s also the most expensive. Be prepared for potential delays or cancellations due to Cusco’s high altitude and unpredictable weather, which can affect air traffic.

For those seeking a more scenic route, bus travel is a great alternative. Peruvian buses are well-maintained and comfortable, though the journey from Lima can take around 20 hours. If you’re traveling from a closer city like Puno, the bus is a highly recommended option.

Traveling light is key for your adventure, but if you have extra luggage, don’t worry! You can safely store your bags at your hotel or with Tupac Adventures in our secure deposit in Cusco. We’ll collect your luggage the morning of your trek and return it to you once you’re back in the city. Make sure your bags are clearly labeled for easy identification.

Cusco sits at an elevation of 3,399 meters (11,152 feet), and altitude sickness is a common concern for travelers. At high altitudes, the air contains less oxygen, which can cause symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. To minimize these effects, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before starting any trek. This allows your body to adjust gradually.

Here are some tips to help you acclimate:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and coca tea, a traditional remedy used for centuries to combat altitude sickness.
  • Take it slow: Avoid strenuous activity during your first few days.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine: These can dehydrate you and worsen symptoms.
  • Consider medication: Consult your healthcare provider about medications like acetazolamide or dexamethasone to prevent altitude sickness.

Remember, your adventure is not a race. Take your time, listen to your body, and enjoy the journey. If you experience severe symptoms, our guides are trained to assist you and ensure your safety.

The weather in the Andes can be unpredictable, with microclimates that change rapidly. The dry season runs from April to October, but rain can occur at any time. Here’s how to prepare:

  • Rain gear: Pack a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and gloves.
  • Layered clothing: Dress in layers to adapt to varying temperatures.
  • Warm layers: Evenings can be chilly, so bring a warm winter-weight jacket.
  • Sun protection: Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sunny days.

Your safety is our top priority. Every Tupac Adventures guide is trained in first aid by certified physicians and carries a first-aid kit equipped to handle common issues like traveler’s diarrhea, cuts, and scrapes. We also provide oxygen for altitude-related discomfort.

In the unlikely event that you feel unable to continue your trek, our team will ensure you’re escorted safely to the nearest clinic. We’ll also make arrangements for you to visit Machu Picchu by train, so you don’t miss out on this iconic experience.

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment. It’s an easy and affordable way to safeguard your trip against unexpected events. Let us know if you need recommendations for reliable providers.

At Tupac Adventures, we’re committed to preserving the beauty of the Andes. We use biodegradable soap, portable eco-friendly toilets, and pack out all waste. Our team is trained to leave no trace, ensuring the trails remain pristine for future generations.

At Tupac Adventures, we believe that travel should be a force for good. We take great pride in giving back to the communities that make our adventures possible, ensuring that every journey leaves a positive and lasting impact. Here’s how we’re making a difference:

Investing in Our Team: Our guides, porters, chefs, and drivers are the heart of our operations. Through English classes and professional development opportunities, we empower them to grow both personally and professionally, opening doors to new opportunities.

Sustainable Practices: We prioritize sustainability by sourcing food from local farmers and markets. This not only supports the local economy but also ensures that our travelers enjoy fresh, delicious meals made with ingredients sourced directly from the land.

Collaboration with Andean Color: Through this social responsibility project, we provide employment to women and men from the Andes, allowing them to earn income through their knowledge of the ancient art of textile weaving. In doing so, we help preserve an invaluable cultural tradition while supporting the local economy.

Rainforest Rescue: We are protecting over 100 hectares of Peruvian rainforest from illegal mining, a constant threat to this invaluable ecosystem. This project aims to conserve biodiversity and mitigate the environmental impact of mining activities.

Collaboration with Ultra Machu Picchu: We’ve partnered with Ultra Machu Picchu to develop a sports culture in the Andean communities, promoting activities that enhance everyone’s mental and physical health. We believe that sport is a powerful tool for fostering well-being, unity, and resilience in local communities.

Your journey with Tupac Adventures is more than just a trip—it’s an opportunity to connect with the culture, history, and people of the Andes. Together, we can create unforgettable memories while making a positive impact on the communities we visit.
